Hi! I'm Coach Franny, and I empower families with challenging children to come together as problem solving teams through a Mindful-Ish® approach to parenting.
The morning drop-off routine can be a bittersweet experience for both parents and children. As little ones grow and develop, the transition from home to school becomes a significant milestone. For some, this separation can trigger feelings of anxiety and distress. Today, we’ll explore strategies to ease the separation process and foster a smoother morning routine.
Separation anxiety is a normal developmental stage that many children experience. It’s characterized by distress when separated from primary caregivers. While it’s natural for children to feel upset, prolonged or intense separation anxiety can be challenging for both child and parent.
Having a consistent morning routine will provide a sense of security for your child. Establish predictable steps, such as getting dressed, eating breakfast, and brushing teeth. Incorporate calming activities like reading a favorite book or listening to soothing music. Put the steps of the routine into a picture schedule so your child understands the upcoming steps. Think of the picture schedule as a roadmap to follow.
It’s essential to acknowledge your child’s feelings without dismissing them. Phrases like “I know it’s hard to say goodbye” or “I understand you’re feeling sad” validate their emotions and create a sense of connection.
Encourage your child for their bravery and resilience, and remember that even small shifts are victories to be celebrated. For example, If your child typically struggles to let go of you in the morning and it takes about five minutes, but today they were ready in only three, that’s a big deal!!
A strong relationship with your child’s caregiver is crucial. Share information about your child’s routines, preferences, and any specific concerns. Regular communication can alleviate your anxiety, and remember the caregiver’s expertise. They are trained professionals with extensive experience in child development.

Remember, every child is unique, so what works for one may not work for another. Be patient and compassionate with your child as they adjust to this new routine. A parent’s response to this transition is crucial for a child’s development now and in the future. By creating a calming environment with activities like reading or listening to music, and using a visual schedule to help them understand what’s next, you can build their confidence and independence. With time and consistency, your child will thrive in their new surroundings.
